A new memorial stone dedicated to the Royal Navy was unveiled in a town’s gardens on Sunday following a campaign by veterans.The service in the Rose Garden at the Abbey Gardens, in Bury St Edmunds, marked 43 years since HMS Sheffield was sunk in the Falklands War after it was hit by a missile.It included a dedication, wreath-laying by HMS Sheffield veterans and the handover of the Bury St Edmunds Royal Navy Veterans Standard to the Sea Cadets. A new memorial stone dedicated to the Royal Navy was unveiled in the Rose Garden, at the Abbey Gardens in Bury St Edmunds, on Sunday. About 100 guests were in attendance including Royal Navy VIPs, military personnel and civic dignitaries.Nigel Wolstenholme, chair of Bury’s RBL branch, said: “It was an excellent service on a lovely day and it was a pleasure to be a part of.“It’s vital that we honour those who put themselves between us and danger and we should always remember their sacrifice.” The service marked 43 years since HMS Sheffield was sunk in the Falklands War“It is so important that we do not put our heads in the sand and forget things like this.”
